Subject: Corona/COVID-19 – Preventive measures at schools Dear Director, Unfortunately, the spread of the corona virus (Covid 19) also requires the temporary closure of all universities in Austria in the current phase. Nationwide school operations are currently not affected. The number of cases of illness at Austrian schools has so far required situational action. Individual classes and/or schools have been and continue to be temporarily partially or completely closed on an ad hoc basis. This procedure has proven its worth. We all hope that there will be no further restrictions. Nevertheless, my request to you is that we remain in close consultation and prepare for school closures together. Preventive preparations for possible school closures In the event of a school closure, many pupils will not fall ill but will spend a few healthy days at home. This time can be used sensibly to repeat and deepen material that has already been covered or to deal with topics that are currently being dealt with in class in peace and quiet. For this reason, we ask you and your teachers at the school to prepare practice materials for the coming days to consolidate and deepen the material currently being covered in class for students, which you can give them to take home or make available to them via digital channels if necessary. You and your team know best which offers make the most sense and cover the interests of your students. Many schools have set up communication channels with students and parents via email or use a learning platform such as Moodle or LMS. School libraries can also provide important impetus by supplying children and young people with reading material. Please make use of all of these tools at your location and as required to ensure that pupils regularly use their time at home for their personal education. BMBWF online offer for pupils and parents in preparation For pupils and parents or guardians, the Ministry of Education is currently preparing an age-appropriate, compact online offer with educational materials that can be used to bridge the gap during a temporary school closure in cooperation with the Lower Austrian University of Teacher Education. We will inform you about this separately. School events/excursions/trips In accordance with the guidelines issued today by the Federal Government’s crisis management team, we recommend that excursions, trips and school events be suspended with immediate effect until further notice. Please contact the tour operator – also with regard to possible cancellation payments. There are certainly still a lot of unanswered questions for you. For example: What happens if the school is closed for longer? How will this affect grading? How do you deal with postponed tests/schoolwork etc.? We will of course continue to keep you informed by direct mail in the coming days and weeks.
I would also ask you to visit our website every day, where we have now also set up a separate Q&A section on the subject of coronavirus and schools/universities at www.bmbwf.gv.at/corona<http://www.bmbwf.gv.at/corona>. Thank you for your tireless commitment! Best regards, Heinz Faßmann Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research Univ.-Prof. Dr. Heinz Faßmann Federal Minister
