Mentally ill: should you be ashamed of it?

As part of the elective subject of ethics, we had the opportunity to carry out the BASTA project . This aims to help destigmatize mentally ill people. In order to prepare ourselves thoroughly for the final meeting with a person affected, we first dealt with the theoretical side of mental illness. We were provided with plenty of material for this, including matching tasks, CVs of people with various mental illnesses and interviews in which we could test our own knowledge about schizophrenia. In our meeting session – which unfortunately took place online due to Covid19 – we got to know a kind-hearted and very open person who, despite numerous strokes of fate, has not lost her positive and cheerful nature. This has put a huge dent in our inner prejudices and this, in turn, testifies to the success of this initiative against the erroneous stigmatization and discrimination of people with mental illness.
