Peer mediation is a building block for peace education, violence prevention and an alternative conflict culture in schools. It generally promotes a (school) climate of tolerance and understanding for one another. Pupils experience themselves not only as the cause of problems, but also as part of the solution to problems. The peer mediators, or peers for short, work together in teams and supervise one or two classes at a time. They support the respective classes in conflict resolution as mediators (SOS – Schüler ohne Streit) and accompany the resolution process. As part of their training, the peers acquire numerous key qualifications that they can use later in their everyday and professional lives.
